• Periodic changes in liver volume caused by the intravenous injection of Ringer' solution, sodium citrate solution, into urethane-anaesthetized dogs, were observed. The periods were from 15 to 38 seconds and the most frequent was about 25 seconds. This change can be divided into that caused by active contractions of the liver (Fig. 1, 2) and that caused by a passive change (Fig. 3). The fact that the active contractions of the liver caused about 10% change in portal venous pressure was also demonstrated.
