In this paper, we focused our attention on the concept of a person's "personal space" and proposed a robot system considering "personal space" for a communications robot. The development of communications robots has advanced in various fields. However, most of these robots are passive in communications. Therefore, it tends to have a lot of interaction with one-way communications from the user. We focused our attention on two-way communications. Person keep a suitable distance from each other naturally when they communicating. This originates in the concept of a person's "personal space", and the distance changes dynamically depending on the strength of the friendship with the user and psychological feelings of the other person. We aimed at the system of proposal the robot that change the suitable distance for each user by installing the concept of a person's "personal space" in the robot. The system need to recognize a face region which the user is, to introduce the concept of person's "personal space" into the robot. Moreover, face region detection is necessary to recognize the face region to determine where the face region exists from the input image. But size change in the face region becomes a problem because the "personal space" involves distance change. Thus we propose face region detection and person recognition methods and show their robustness in spite of distance changes. In addition, the robot recognized user's reaction as a result of the robot's action. By the result of the user's action, the robot has a "friendly parameter" that related strength of the friendship with the user. In this paper, we show the possibility of a robot system of personal space that determined suitable distance between the user and the robot according to the "Friendly parameter".
