As a leading member of the Association for the Scientization Movement of China, Gu Yuxiu delineated a special image of science, which to large extent represented what the Association tried to introduce to the public. Gu's view of science included two sides: on one hand, science was a non-utilitarian, objective and independent system of spiritual civilization; on the other hind, by the concept of scinetization, science should serve for various utilitarian aims. His ideas, full of seeming contradiction, was rooted in the positivist view of science as well as decided by the realistic national need. Moreover, it was also a particular reflection of Chinese contemporary social and cultural context in the history of interaction between science and society.
