The author tries to investigate the descriptive phases of the developmental history of English 'do' from the stage of OE to that of early ModE although many reseraches on this subject such as A. Ellegard(1953), F.Th Visser(1952) have been published. The transitional cross section of the development can be seen through the data collected from W.Shakespeare's works. The author has taken his Four Great Tragedies-Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth as distinctive specimens.
