Style is a highly complex phenomenon and can be looked at from many different points of view. It is often regarded as the exclusive territory of literary critics and is discussed from an impressionistic or aesthetic point of view which leads to an evaluation of the work. As linguistic science develops, many linguists are concerned with aspects of literary style as it relates to the use of linguistic forms in social and cultural context. Especially, in the last few years the interest in the applicability of linguistics to literary texts has been increased. In order to apply some linguistic techniques to the study of style, various definitions for the term must be first examined to find some common elements among them; the concept is so highly abstract that it seems almost impossible to reach one precise definition. After some concepts are presented, several methods of analysis which are seemingly relavant to the study of style are examined. The procedures introduced here are still incomplete and a large number of actual texts must be analyzed to prove the validity of the methods. The detailed analysis of texts will not destroy their literary value; rather it will help to recognize the scope and variety of the language as a whole.
