'Yin Shu' of bamboo slips of about 2200 years ago was unearthed from a grave at Zhangjiashan, Jianling, Hubei Province, in China. Forty-three systems of the Taoist breathing exercises for the treatment of diseases were inscribed on the slips. However, no studies have been reported on their feature. This study aimed at analyzing and featuring them as the way of exercises, The results of this study may be summarized as follows: i) The principles of forty-three systems of the Taoist breathing exercises for the treatment of diseases were mainly influenced by the theory of main and channel and that of 'Yin' and 'Yang' as well as the thought of movement. ii) There were two kinds of names in the forty-three systems, that is, the names for diseases and symptoms. iii) Eighty-six movements were prepared to treat forty-three kinds of diseases and symptoms, and they seemed to have focused on the treatment of chronic diseases and symptoms. There were three kinds of exercises, free exercises, apparatus exercises and aided exercises. iv) Most were free exercises, and there are three kinds of exercises performed by sitting, standing or lying down. Eight kinds of apparatuses, namely, a wall, a pillar, cold water, rice, a cane, a hanging plank, a wooden ball and a pillow were chiefly used for the exercises v) It was clarified that massage and Taoist breathing exercises had already been developed about 2200 years ago. These forty-three systems were about eighteen years older than the Taoist breathing exercises painted on silk excavated from Mawangduis' grave.
