'Yin Shu' is included in the Han dynasty bamboo letter pad unearthed for the M247 grave in Zhangjiashan, Hubei province in January 1984. It has the Taoist breathing exercises which are composed of 43 sets of exercises, 29 of which seemed aimed at the treatment of disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate 29 sets. In the first place, 93 figures were restored preceding studies. An analysis of those figures clarified the contents and characteristics of the exercises using free movements for the treatment of disease. The result of this study may be summarized as follows: 1) The Taoist breathing exercises using free movements for the treatment of disease are based on the concept of the unification of heaven and men as well as that of the 'dynamism' theories of 'Qi' and 'Yin and Yan'. 2) The Taoist breathing exercises include elements such as (1) movements practiced in the prone position: (2) the use of massage techniques: (3) the power of the mind to affect the body: (4) help from others: (5) the use of the Taoist breathing exercises for health together with those using free movements. 3) The scheduling, the intensity and limits of the treatment exercises. 4) Exercises for the prevention of disease. 5) A comparison of these exercises using free movements with the exercises painted on silk excavated from Ma Wang Dui's grave showing that the movements are different in spite having of the same name, suggesting that there have been other movements which were not painted on silk.
