Conversation classes are often comprised of students with varying levels of ability in English. These students need individual feedback if they are to improve their language skills. However, individual feedback by instructors is extremely difficult as conversations, unlike writing, are difficult to capture and often class sizes are large making it impossible to listen to every student. This paper describes the procedures followed in two Intensive English Program conversation classes at Poole Gakuin University where student conversations were captured on video for later self-evaluation by the students. The challenge and rationale for videoing student conversations is described, followed by a discussion of the organization of the courses, procedures followed by students for self-evaluation, student reactions and instructor responses. The procedure of videoing student conversations for self-evaluation enables students to actually see the progress they have made from their first to their most recent video conversation, providing motivation for continued and sustained effort.
