Based on recent statistics on the status of women in academic positions as well as the trends in continuing education among high school graduates and university graduates, the role and responsibility of Ochanomizu University for education and research in science for women in the 21st century is discussed. An important conclusion is that our university should continue to nurture talented and independent women leaders as in the past, and should maintain steady progress in the gender-sensitive direction through the various aspects of education.
