Chromosome characterization of three Hystrix (Triticeae: Poaceae) taxa using FISH analysis

Chromosome characterization of three Hystrix taxa, H. patula Moench, H. duthiei (Stapf.) Bor. ssp. duthiei and H. duthiei ssp. longearistata (Hack.) Baden, Fred. & Seberg, was carried out by fluorescence in situ hybridization using six different sequences as probes. 5S and 45S rRNA genes were respectively located on different chromosomes in H. duthiei ssp. duthiei and H. duthiei ssp. longearistata, but on the same chromosomes in H. patula. The chromosomes of the three taxa also showed different patterns of hybridization with the Tail repetitive sequence, while the (AAG)_<10> repetitive sequence and clones pPlTaq2.5 and pCbTaq4.14 hybridized only to H. patula chromosomes. Based on the findings, the genomes of H. duthiei ssp. duthiei and H. duthiei ssp. longearistata were deemed genomically similar, but are evidently different from that of H. patula.
