In the prewar Japan, it was agricultural society. The women at those times worked all day in the fields in addition to the housework. But the biggest difference between them and the present women is that they did without salaries. And they were not counted as the worker at statistical level. Therefore, the labor participation rate was not so high in those days. Such a situation has continued for a while in the postwar. In Japan, the era of rapid growth from the late 1950s to 1973 took place with the structural transformation of the economy. As a result, the base of Japan's social structure shifted from the farmer and the small business manager to the white collar company employee. White-collar workers made it possible to make their wives become full-time housewives due to the high salary. The prevalence in our society of the norm expressed by such statements as "Women should dedicate their life to their husbands and maintaining the family" and "Women's primary role should be homemaking and child care" has took place since the era of rapid economic growth. When we think about labor participation rate of the married female in Japan, it is said that the Douglas=Arisawa theorem holds true. That is, if husbands' income is high, probability of his wife's taking job would be low. In this background, there existed lifetime employment system and the seniority wage system. Thus, even if women do not work in labor market, it is considered to be no risk for their family to live. But now the situation has changed. The competition has got severe since prevalence of the globalization in world economy. So firms have got to pursue efficiency and rationalization. As a result, position of workers became unstable. We would like to examine how the married females have reacted to such a situation. In addition, the social conditions around the married female have changed. They have been freed from the traditional norm which has bound their behavior. So, we would like to examine how their lifestyle has changed.
