As contrasted with be-passives, get-passives in English are said to have notoriously complex and unclear properties ranging from stylistic restrictions (colloquialism) to syntactic idiosyncrasies (rare occurrence of by-phrases and their syntactic invisibility) to semantic and pragmatic peculiarities (agency, responsibility, affectedness, subjective nuances). This paper critically examines the empirical validity of those alleged peculiarities in light of naturally occurring examples collected from BNC and other corpora and suggests an analysis of get-passives in which their syntactic structure is represented in tandem with their conceptual structure.
