A novel analysis is proposed for the systematic semantic extension of verbs of sound emission to verbs of motion, as in The elevator wheezed upward. Contrary to Levin and Rappaport Hovav's (1996) claim that verbs of sound emission are originally unergative and shift to unaccusative verbs when combined with path phrases, this paper shows that these verbs are unaccusative from the start. The motional meaning is not derived by shifting the semantic type of the main verb, but by integrating the LCS of the sound emission verb into the manner component of the path phrase's LCS. This analysis implies that contrary to the standard view, the path phrase is semantically the head, to which the meaning of the sound emission verb is subordinated.
