Taking the case of polymer science, this paper presents a detailed discussion of Chinese scientific exchange and cooperation in this field in the ideological and political context during the period of nearly 30 years from 1949 to the late 1970s when China started its reform and opening up to the outside. The policy started with a leaning thoroughly upon the Soviet Union and other countries in the "socialist camp, " went through a transition period of exchange with neighboring countries (such as Japan) and politically neutral countries, to the exchange with "capitalist countries, " especially the United States, and eventually to the open and independent international exchange and cooperation with all countries. It is concluded that the international exchange and model and evolution of China's polymer science have thoroughly reflected the close relationship of science with the political and national ideological form during this period and scientific cooperation and exchange had to bear a double task-academic and political, with the latter playing a dominant role.
