While the services that native-speaking English teachers provide are obvious, many inquire about the benefits that the instructors receive from teaching abroad. Utilizing an online questionnaire that targeted native-speaking English teachers currently teaching in Japan or who have done so in the past, this paper examines how the careers of native speakers are influenced by their experiences abroad. The study identifies several ways in which the careers and lives of foreigners are enriched as a result of teaching English in Japan. Expatriates teaching English in Japan are able to advance fundamental career skills and also broaden their horizons by participating in the international experience. Moreover, for many the time spent teaching in Japan paves the way for a new career or substantiates their desire to continue employment in the teaching profession. For others, however, the experience signals that pursuing an academic career or working overseas is not the best course of action for their future. Finally, the experience considerably enriches the personal lives of the native speakers who live, work and function in Japan. Although the questionnaire sampled merely a tiny cross section of native-speaking English teachers in Japan, it acts as a microcosm, supporting the general notion that teaching English abroad, whether in Japan or elsewhere, is an excellent experience that can advance the careers as well as the personal lives of those who undertake the endeavor.
