Western historians of science in George Sarton's orbit are offered as a counter example to Edward Said's discouraging thesis about a conspiracy of malevolence governing Orientalist scholarship in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The ecumenical approach of Sarton and his colleagues is a useful point of reference for evaluating the declining influence of postmodernist "theory" in which all notions of science are held to vary dramatically from one location and civilization to another.
