The history of nuclear fusion research in Japan is divided into 4 periods, i.e., the pre-historic period, the dawn period, the growth period, and the period of large tokamaks. Discussions of nuclear fusion research in Japan became active in various respects from the point in time of the First United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy held in 1955. This point in time can be recognized as the origin of the history of nuclear fusion research in Japan. Soon after the start of nuclear fusion research the issue of whether basic research or the construction of a medium sized fusion device should be promoted was discussed intensively among researchers in the fusion community. This was widely known as the famous "AB dispute." This dispute came to an end by concluding that basic research should be promoted at first and in 1961 the Institute of Plasma Physics, Nagoya University (IPPJ) was established. During the first half of the 1960's nuclear fusion research was in a somewhat stagnant state. After the successful T3 tokamak experiment of the USSR, the world fusion community began concentrating its efforts into tokamak research. This was also the case for the Japanese fusion community and the Special Comprehensive Research Project of Atomic Energy starting from the 1970's. Many fusion experimental devices were studied in this period. From the first half of the 1980's the world's large tokamaks one after another came into operation, among which JT-60 of JAERI became in operation in 1985, and nuclear fusion research entered a new era of large tokamaks.
