Two groups of powdered reagents, hereinafter referred as PR-A and PR-B respectively, were prepared for spectrophotometric determination of phosphate. PR-A is a mixture of sulfamic acid and L-ascorbic acid at the ratio of 45 : 1 in weight. PR-B is a mixture of sodium sulfate anhydrous, sodium molybdate and potassium antimonyl tartrate (1/2 hydrate) at the ratio of 250 : 15 : 1 in weight, respectively. To 40-60ml of a sample solution, 1.5-3g of PR-A is added and shaken to dissolve it for about 30 seconds, and then 0.4-0.6g of PR-B is added. After 10min the absorbance of the solution is measured at 880nm. Phosphate was determined in the range of 0.1-3mg/l with relative standard deviation of 0.3% at 2mg/l of phosphate. Ions, contained in river or sea water, did not interfere, and both PR-A and PR-B were stable during long period. The reagents are very convenient to carry and use for field survey.
