The Way of the World, the last drama written by William Congreve, has apparently a design of comedy of manners, with its characters who are licentious and full of desires. The vicious characters carry out quite a lot of intrigues to obtain a lover and money. However, there is one important point where this drama differs from other comedies of manners. Usually, comedies of manners praise their villain characters. That is an ordinary trait of Restoration comedies. In the meantime, The Way of the World does not praise its villain characters. It praises other characters who are apparently vicious and yet virtuous in their own way. Also, unlike a satire, the comedy does not punish its villain characters. These are the unique charactersitics of this Congreve's comedy. Today it is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of the Restoration comedy. But when this comedy was performed for the first time, it was unsuccessful and Congreve stopped writing dramas ever after. It would be advisable to suppose the reason why this comedy was so unpopular.
