Through this essay I would like to shed some lights on the techniques with which Evelyn Waugh wrote Put Out More Flags. First I discuss how he described the early World War II days. If he had written the details of the period too closely, the novel must have lost its value as a fiction. As a matter of fact, when he wrote the details, he did it very concisely. Mostly when he needed to mention the details, he did it by hinting. Consequently, the novel kept its value as a fiction. Secondly, he introduced the form of Picaresque novel. Through this form, the author not only gave his work credit as a fiction, but also provided his readers laughter, or the composure to laugh. Although the novel is full of follies, the style of Picaresque novel invites its readers not to criticize but to laugh at them. Third, I mention the importance of the structure of this novel. Despite the fact that this is a kind of Picaresque novel, the last part of it does not deal with the hero. Of course, the author did it intentionally. This I believe is a very interesting feature of this work. Also, the author, through the structure of this novel, invites the reader to appreciate the difference between active people and inactive people and what not, through which he insinuates his message.
