With a whispering voice of the narrator, Sth, I know that woman, Jazz (1992) starts. This voice at first exults as it records the emergence of a new order: Here comes the new. Look out. There goes the sad stuff. … History is over, you all and everything's ahead at last. And at the end of the story it cries for love without hesitation. It so easily brings us to the confusing world and the voice of the narrator hurtles along offering bits of information which makes no sense until we advance much further where seemingly unrelated characters and events are realized. Morrison's original interest in the story was to know her broader fascination with women's unselfishness- the willingness to die for someone they love more than themselves. Morrison, when she had an interview titled The Seams Can't Show. observed, Actually, I think, all the time that I write, I'm writing about love or its absence. Focusing on her novel Jazz, I hope to explore her concern with the notions of love and loss, so that I can argue how the voice of the narrator in Jazz whispers us about what true human love would be like. Let us listen to the woman of sound, of love, and of divine.
