This study aims to explore the possibility that Ishigaki Islanders tend to use their dialect with the 'absolute' frame of reference i.e. a coordinate system that requires persons to maintain their orientation with fixed bearings i.e. cardinal directions, rather than the one with the 'relative' or viewer-centered frame of reference such as using notions like 'left' and 'right'. This field research enables us to make three provisional conclusions: 1) Ishigaki Islanders are inclined to use the absolute frame of reference to describe stationary objects e.g. houses when they talk to Ishigaki Islanders, but not when they talk to non-Ishigaki Islanders ; 2) Ishigaki Islanders tend to use the relative frame of reference to navigate through the city (e.g. 'Turn right at the next traffic light') ; 3) Ishigaki Islanders make gestures to accurately point to the places referred to in immediate interaction, mostly based on cardinal directions. The choice of a frame of reference correlates with many other aspects of cognition such as memory, gesture, and interaction. This study uncovers such aspects of spatial cognition in Ishigaki Island that have been unexplored.
