This study treats referential shifting of first person forms as a case of intersubjectification. Intersubjectification has just begun to draw renewed attention from functional linguists after a long interval since Benveniste (1956); there seem to be no hypothesis established by rigorous data and arguments. This report thus proposes an interpretation of intersubjectification with evidence from several languages. For a better understanding of intersubjectification, referential shifting needs to be considered. Referential shifting is regarded as the process of shifting or expanding the reference from one grammatical person to another. Our survey results propose an account of treating referential shifting in the framework of intersubjectification in a broader cross-linguistic context.
