Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is not only the story of a man's journey down an African river. As this paper will demonstrate, it is also a story about reading : how Marlow attempts to make sense of Kurtz and Africa, how readers attempt to make sense of Conrad's text. It is the story of how Marlow fails to comprehend Kurtz and Africa, and how readers fail to understand Conrad's text. It is a story about what readers do when frustrated.
