超弦理論は、重力をも含めた自然界の全ての4つの相互作用を統一的に記述する理論の最も有力な候補として期待されている。1990年代後半には行列模型を用いて超弦理論の構成的定義、つまり摂動論に依らない定式化をする試みがなされてきた。行列模型から時空及びゲージ群などがどのようにして生成されるかを明らかにすることは、非常に興味深い問題である。
