• We develop a microscopic statistical model based on wave packet wave functions which are commonly used in the microscopic transport models. Under an assumption that each wave packet should have energy distribution of Poisson type, we show that the canonical statistical weight can be calculated correctly enough to describe the transition from liquid-like phase to the gas-like phase in finite nuclei. For an application, we have studied the statistical properties of ^<12>C and ^<40>Ca , and the calculated results show that the standard liquid drop model results are reproduced at low temperatures, while at higher temperatures the system behaves as free nucleon gas. When the volume in which statistical equilibrium is achieved becomes sufficiently large, multifragmentation is shown to appear.
