East, West, Home's Best : Comparing expressions of direction and position in Japanese and English

This paper considers differences of usage and connotation between English and Japanese in relation to areas of expression related to direction and position. Focussing mainly on come and go ; north, south, east and west ; and left and right, it shows how the contrasting ways in which Japanese and English speakers view the world will colour their use of direction and position words, and discusses the importance of the starting point, or point of reference, for movement. This is connected with the position of speaker and addressee in the case of come and go ; with reference to the sun and consideration of geographical location in the etymology and connotations of north, south, east and west; and with the background of cultural practice in the use of left and right.
