Chromosome preparations of five species of perciform fishes of the families Serranidae (Diplectrum radiale, Diplectrum formosum, Mycteroperca rubra and Epinephelus guaza) and Pomacentridae (Abudefduf saxatilis) collected in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro-Brazil), were analysed. A high degree of synapses through centromeric associations was observed in mitotic cells. Such associations involved up to five apparently nonhomologous chromosomes and were only observed among acrocentric chromosomes, even in the species that also had biarmed chromosomes. This nonrandon radial distribution of some chromosomes during metaphase was interpreted as being related to a compositional similarity of the DNA present in these chromosome areas or to heterochromatin attraction during interphase. This phenomenon may be playing an important role in the diversification of these karyotypes along the evolution of these species, since it may, for instance, facilitate the occurrence of Robertsonian translocations.
