Chromosome elimination and germ line-restricted microchromosomes in Paramyxine sheni from Taiwan

Chromosome elimination has been reported in 7 hagfish species to date. We have confirmed that this phenomenon occurs in Paramyxine sheni collected from Taiwan. In this species, numerous microchromosomes were observed in germ cells. These microchromosomes are C-band-positive and give rise to inter- and intrain-dividual variations in the chromosome numbers in germ cells. In one specimen there were few microchromosomes and the modal number of chromosomes was 66. In another specimen there were more than 30 microchromosomes and the modal number of chromosomes was 96. On the other hand, in somatic cells, no microchromosomes were observed and a constant chromosome number, 34, was observed in all specimens we examined. These results suggest that the microchromosomes were supernumerary and were eliminated together with some other chromosomes from presumptive somatic cells during their differentiation into somatic cells. The amount of DNA eliminated from presumptive somatic cells varied among specimens from 70.8% to 74.5%. This value is higher than that of any of the 7 hagfish species reported previously.
