Childcare in Britain has been neglected for too long. As a result, the quality of childcare can be variable. The cost of care is high and out of the reach of many parents. In some areas there are not enough childcare places and parents' access to them is hampered by poor information. Women and men struggle with choices over work and family responsibilities, whether to stay at home with their children full-time or balance home responsibilities with work. The Government intends to support families and children by providing good quality, accessible and affordable childcare. This paper examines not only a wide variety of early education and childcare in modern Britain but also its historical background.
