The purpose of this paper is to introduce an approach for improving upper grade students' English proficiency at Miyakonojo National College of Technology, where the English curriculum for the fifth-year students was revised in 2004. Since then, the fifth year students have been obliged to take English for two credits, which had been an elective subject for several years. This paper also refers to some methods the English teaching staff have taken in order to make the fourth-year and the fifth-year students acquire reading skills which enable them to read intensively or rapidly, and furthermore, to improve their TOEIC scores.
