The Course of Study for Foreign Languages were revised recently considering necessity of developing students' communicating abilities, and now there are seven subjects for English classes ; English I, English II, Oral Communication A, Oral Communication B, Oral Communication C, Reading, and Writing, from which high schools, including junior years in technical colleges, are obliged to optionally sellect three or four of them according to their educational situations. However, most schools tend to apply many classes for English I or English II, in which students use textbooks with many reading materials. Traditionally, Japanese teachers have performed their classes by means of Grammar-Translation Method, which is today severely criticized for failing in training students' communicating abilities. So I would like to grope for an approach based on reading, which could develop students' communicating abilities.
