The public library in Singapore was founded during the British colonial period. Therefore, the role of librarian was a "custodian of books" at traditional library until 1980's under the influence of British colonial library. However, new informational policy being enforced at 1990's changed it and librarian has become "service-oriented Information provider, " who provides enough service in accordance with the national demands. How was this change done in such a short term? This article focuses on the transformation of the role of public library and librarian from traditional era to today in Singapore and discusses how this change had been done in accordance with national situation.
