This investigation was carried out to clarify the influences of the environmental winter coldness and snow on the living activities and health behaviors of adults and elderly people. The subjects were selected from the participants attended for the open seminar conducted by Tenshi College from 2002-2004. Among them, 113 participants' answers were targeted in this investigation that was done by sending the questionaire to each of the subjects by post. The average age of a subject was 59 and 81.4% of them were females. The items of the investigation included on basic attributions, physical activities such as clearing the snow off the roads, sports and outdoor activities, mental burden due to coldness and snow, controlling the atmospheric conditions in the room, the physical and mental balance, and health behaviors during the winter. Results 1) The frequencies of outdoor physical activities were different significantly in between the winter and rest of the seasons. Two reasons were observed ; the frozen ice-roads and the coldness affected the females over 60's, unemployed and the housewives. 2) Physical activities were related with the employment and they decreased in unemployed subjects and housewives. 3) The subjects who continued physical training everyday and 1-4 times per week were compared. People who continued physical training every day remained almost as the same as in winter too but those who continued 1-4 times per week were decreased, in the number of times. 4) Mental burden was found in 68.1% of the subjects in the winter and the reasons were as same as the frozen ice roads, cleaning out the snow, and coldness. 5) Female subjects revealed depression, catching a cold, leg and lower backbone pains. 6) Almost all the subjects kept the room temperature at controlled level but unable to maintain the required humidity. Most of them revealed skin symptoms such as dryness and itch when the humidity was kept below 40% level but the effect was much less at above this value. 7) Subjects were cautioned for the room temperature and humidity, prevention measures for the cold and slippery winter roads, and promoting physical stretch as health behaviors in winter life. Conclusion The environment of winter effected on the outdoor and physical activities, mental burden, and the skin symptoms of the subjects. Out of 68.8% of them had mental burden of frozen ice roads, cleaning out the snow, and the coldness. It is essential to maintain the room humidity at the minimum level of 40% or above if possible to eliminate skin troubles.
