This paper proposes a selection method of terminal antenna for reducing a cost of the MIMO system without performance deterioration as possible. In the proposed system, M antennas are selected form N antennas (M<N) so as to maximize the channel capacity. It is indicated from simulation results that the capacity of MIMO system using two antennas (N=2) is almost the same with that using all antenna elements (N=M) especially when directional antennas are used for base station antennas. Next, effects of directivity and beam direction of base station antennas on the system capacity is evaluated. As a result, it is shown that the capacity is greatly improved compared with the case of 2X2 MIMO by setting the directional pattern of base station appropriately. This paper also considers a simplified method for selecting the terminal antennas, which is based on received power instead of channel capacity. Effectiveness of simplified method is verified by simulation.
