A phased array antenna provides beam scanning capability by changing the inter-element phase relationship. One issue that must be taken into account is mutual coupling among elements. In conventional way of design, most engineers try to reduce the mutual coupling effect or decoupling. The opposite way or increasing the coupling by using parasitic elements was proposed to simplify the antenna structure. In this paper, the beam scanning of a partially driven phased array antenna with parasitic elements has been studied. The validity of the proposed idea will be shown with several advantages in comparison with a fully driven array antenna through the simulation study.
