This paper examines the transmission spectra of single-wall carbon nanotubes over a wide range of energies of 0.015-5 eV. Up to seven resolved optical transitions, several of them unobserved in earlier work, are seen in the range, 0.5-4 eV at room temperature. New fine optical structures appear at E = 2.75 and 2.91 eV as the sample temperature is reduced. The spectrum exhibits Drude-like behavior in the low-energy infrared region. The absorption peaks are attributable to electronic transitions between density-of-state peaks of either metallic or semiconducting nanotubes. The high sensitivity of the present work allows researchers to resolve weak optical structures in carbon nanotubes.
