A mixed-mode optimum power calibration (MOPC) method on CD-recordable/CD-ReWritable discs in a CD-R/RW drive is proposed. The MOPC procedure conducts the recording power calibration procedure at areas not only at the inner most radius but also at the outer most radius of a CD-R or CD-RW disc. As specified in the Orange Book, the normally employed OPC procedure conducts power calibration only at the inner most radius of a disc where it allows the OPC procedure to be performed up to 100 times maximum on a CD-R disc. As a contrast, the MOPC proposed in this paper allows the OPC procedure to be performed more than 1OO times on a CD-R disc. Further, as the recording speed advances higher, the OPC conducts at outer radius would have less stringent requirement on disc rotation rate and better reliability on power calibration. This MOPC can be applied onto not only CD-R/CD-RW disc but also DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD + RW discs. Further, the concept and methodology of MOPC can also be applied onto any future disc format of any optical recording systems.
