A new flue gas treatment device using a pulsed high current electron beam in combination with a photocatalyst (TiO_2) was investigated. When the pulsed electron beam (100keV, 120A, 1μS and 4.7J/pulse) was injected into the gas chamber with a TiO_2 sheet on the inner wall, NO_x in a 5% oxygen mixed NO (= 200ppm)/N_2 gas was removed with the energy efficiency of removal as high as 1010nmol/J at a removal ratio of 83%, in which the amount of NO_x removed in 10min without any radiation, about 25% of the initial NO concentration, was not included in the energy efficiency calculation. The concentration of NO_2 was below about 3ppm in this process, which was a significant characteristic of NO_x removal in this device. When the flowing 4% oxygen mixed NO (= 200ppm)/N_2 gas at a flow rate 1.4L/min was irradiated by successive pulses of the electron beam, the energy efficiency of removal of 864nmol/J at the removal ratio of 41% was obtained.
