A novel arseno-sugar was isolated from the brown alga Sargassum thunbergii. Instead of the dimethylarsinoyl group reported for algal arseno-sugars, this has a trimethylarsonium group, which is borne by arsenobetaine, a ubiquitous organoarsenic compound in marine animals. This may be an intermediate between arseno-sugars and arsenobetaine.
