In the new era of ubiquity, the conventional consumer electronics, such as TV, printer, microwave, etc., are turning into service-oriented home networked appliances. Even though there are many initiatives working on the home networking field, a lack of standardization in this tremendous competition is still a key issue. As the complexity and diversity of the home appliances keep increasing, an interoperable home network framework for integration of the abstracted device services is therefore proposed. Moreover, to encourage the extensibility of devices and service/function interfaces, a Home Network Markup Language (HNML) is proposed to serve as a standard enabling the interoperable interfaces among appliances' services. To test the feasibility of the conceptual framework that is proposed, a prototype is implemented in Java, with the adoption of UPnP architecture for the abstraction of the physical network.
