This study used work sampling to monitor and analyze nursing services conducted at special functioning hospitals, general hospitals and geriatric hospitals. Its aim was to identify differences in services in order to develop a nursing service-classifying system that can be used in the field. Comparisons of services by hospital function indicated that a majority (approx. 70%) of nursing services in all three of the target facility types consisted of 'Direct Nursing' and 'Indirect Nursing'. There were differences, however, when analyzed by hospital function and nursing position. A significant difference was observed according to the type of facility in terms of the proportion of nursing services; special functioning hospitals conducted more 'Indirect Nursing' while general and geriatric hospitals, more 'Direct Nursing' (p<0.01). Moreover, analysis of nursing services on a hospital function and nursing position basis indicated that work conducted by head nurses in special functioning hospitals is most frequently comprised of 'Indirect Nursing' and in general hospitals, 'Other'. Common trends were observed in the work conducted by senior nursing staff in special functioning hospitals and general hospitals, as the workload for 'Indirect Nursing' was most predominant among them. There was a significant difference in the proportion of work conducted by staff nurses according to the type of facility; those in special functioning hospitals were shown to engage in 'Indirect Nursing' while those in general hospitals, 'Direct Nursing' most (p<0.01). In conclusion, the study identified the actual nursing services being conducted according to the hospital function, and also suggested, along with the findings on a nursing position basis, a possible direction for nursing services.
