The dyes used as indicators in two-phase titrations to date have been hydrophilic. The colour change at the end-point occurs on transfer of the indicator dye from one phase to the other ; sometimes the end-point is taken as the point where the colour Intensity is judged to be the same in the two phases. Two-phase titration has therefore been applied only to the determination of large ionic surfactants. In this paper, the hydrophobic dye 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol is suggested as a replacement for hydrophilic dyes in two-phase titrations. This makes it possible to detect the end-point In a single phase : the colour changes occur in one phase without transfer of the indicator from one phase to the other. As a result, this type of indicator provides a sharp end-point and allows two-phase titration to be used for ions other than ionic surfactants.
