Variamine blue B is oxidized to from a blue dyestuff cation. The tribromo - mercury ( H ) complex anion can be extracted into nitrobenzene with the dyestuff cation. This system was studied in detail to confirm the structure of this colored complex. The presence of mercury ( II ) in the aqueous phase leads to a considerable increase in the absorbance of the extracts. The absorption spectra has a maximum value at 600 nm. The absoramce maximum of the reagent blank in the nitrobenzene is at 500 nm. The shift in the organic layer may be attributed to the effect of the association between the dyestuff cation and the complex anion. In aqueous solution the tribromo-mercury (II) complex anion is in equilibrium with the mercury bromide and tetrabromo-mercury ( H ) complex anion. The distribution of the tribromo-mercury (II) concentration is about 60% from the formation constant. The overall molar ratio of the mercury (II) : bromide : dye is 1 : 3 : 1,and its formula can be suggested as Dye^+・[HgBr_3]^-.
