Ubiquitous wireless networks and wireless sensor networks, which consist of access points and a number of wireless terminals with simple functions, provide users with a wide range of applications such as environment monitoring and traffic surveillance. In these networks, the access point must be capable of accommodating the great many wireless terminals, while providing high throughput performance. Therefore, we proposed a novel DSA scheme that employs both a polling-based method and a random access method. In this scheme, the access point polls the terminals to decrease the random accesses made by the terminals as much as possible; there are two kinds of polling channel: control channel (CcH) and data channel (Dch). Simulations verify that the proposed scheme with Dch offers better throughput performance than the conventional scheme under the condition of constant data size. However, the condition is not general because the data is quite varied (i.e. control information and user data in some upper layers). Therefore, we propose a new scheme, which selects the optimal polling channel between the Cch and the Dch. This scheme predicts the optimal Dch size by using the traffic characteristic so as to suppress bandwidth wastage, predicts the throughput for each polling channel, and selects the polling channel that offers the higher throughput. Simulations verify that the proposed scheme offers better transmission performance than conventional schemes.
