Since the turn of the 20th century, modern society has had a profound impact on the way people think and the Value they place on their past. Similarly, the most important phases in the rites of passage of life have not been excluded in this wave of change, particularly in old cultures. Behind this change is the acceleration of the depopulation of some older societies . There is one small island, Tobishima Island, off, the coast of Yamagata Prefecture, that highlights these changes. It takes ninety minutes from Sakata Port to Tobishima Katsuura Port by the ”New Tobishima” ferry. The small and remote island measures 2.32 k㎡ and has a circumference of l0.2 km. In 1940, there were 1788 islanders on Tobishjma. Today, according the registration of the households in the island, there are only 301. Meanwhile, along with the sharp decline in population on the island, the birthrate has decreased and the population has aged. Starting from the beginning of the Jomon period (13,000-30OBC), islanders off the main island of Japan have possessed nlany unique and valuable cultural treasures. But mamy traditional cultures and customs have been fading away because fewer and fewdr islanders are able to learn the ancient cultural ways of living, or pass down their traditiorial skills to the next generation, a direct result of the rapid aging of the poulation and increase in childless families . Under the background of this society, this paper will discuss the changing procedures and characteristics of rites of passage on Tobishima Island based on the results of a field trip to the island. In addition, social problems will also be examined and discussed.
