Real Time Deformation Model of Liver Based on Structural Mechanics for Medical Training Systems and Its Accuracy Evaluation

Medical training systems based on virtual-reality techniques for laparoscopic surgery have been widely applied as new medical training systems. In a previous paper, we proposed the deformation model based on the beam of structural mechanics and applied this model to the simulation of the liver deformation. In this model, its calculation cost is much less than that of the 3D FEM, since the beam deformation is calculated as one-dimensional elements. However its deformation accuracy was not evaluated at that time. In this paper, our deformation model is compared with the 3D FEM by assuming that the 3D FEM organ model can simulates real deformation.
