Cotton fibers cultivated in the northern and southern hemispheres have differences in their micro-fine structures. These differences were hypothesized to be due to the effect of the earth's rotation during their growth. To examine this hypothesis, cotton was grown under a normal condition or a rotatory cultivation condition, which is expected to have the same effect as cultivated in the southern hemisphere. For this study, cotton was raised under the two conditions and growing cotton fibers were obtained from the cotton boll. The optical rotation power of these fibers was measured with a polarizing microscope. For fibers cultivated under normal conditions, the optical rotation power of the Z-type convoluted parts was greater than that of the S-type parts. On the other hand, for those cultivated under the rotatory conditions, the optical rotation power of the S-type convoluted parts was greater than that of the Z-type parts. We therefore concluded that rotatory motion during growth affects the helical structure of cotton fibrils.
