Interview surveys and color analyses were conducted to study the color preferences for clothing articles of elderly women aged 60 and above who were living in Nishinomiya City, Japan. The controls were students aged 18 to 24 of Mukogawa Women's University. The color preferences were identified using a color chart of 130 colors and a color detector to directly measure the clothing worn at the interview. The elderly group showed a wide range of color preferences while the students tended to prefer certain colors. The students expressed a desire to wear the most fashionable colors, while the elderly had developed their personal preferences and did not pursue fashion trends. The colors worn by the elderly women were of a limited range, tending toward yellow-red or neutral colors. A seasonal change was found, showing that the elderly women wore the same type of colors regardless of the season, but varied the brightness.
