In the psycholinguistic literature, a garden-path effect is useful empirical evidence that shows how the human sentence processing mechanism resolves the structural ambiguity of sentences. During past three decades, numerous experimental investigations based on the effect have been carried out in the head-initial languages, like English, and many models of sentence processing are proposed. On the other hand, researches in the head-final languages, typically Japanese, have been still developing until today, regardless of being pointed out that most of the current models in English cannot apply to the processing of Japanese (e.g. Mazuka & Itoh, 1995). In addition, the overall outcomes of the researches conducted in Japanese are little known by not only the foreign researchers but also native ones. In this paper, it is attempted to present a broad overview of experimental findings of garden-path effects that have been conducted in Japanese, in order to serve as the foundation for future development in studies of Japanese sentence processing.
